With a vision for building something meaningful, our founder and longtime director, an Original Freedom Rider and Civil Rights Activist, has dedicated his life to what he calls “simple service to his people,” especially children of the city. A respected leader and advocate, he played an influential role in the Civil Rights Movement, and his encounter with Robert Kennedy helped prompt President John F. Kennedy to activate the National Guard for the protection of the Freedom Riders. His deep love for New Orleans culture has inspired many to become involved in Mardi Gras Indian Tribes and Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs that continues to shape the city’s rich heritage.
